I think one of the things that gets under my skin the most is when people categorize Christianity under religion. They always seem to say "Christianity has too many rules" to which I always want to respond "well did you read the whole bible"? The only commandments that Jesus gave was to love God and love people. Now of course when you are following those 2 commands you are following all of the commandments. But when it comes to religion, Jesus basically shot religion down with everything he had.
Christianity is about the Gospel of Christ. Pure and simple. While Jesus walked the earth he was constantly shooting down religious leaders because they were used to the old testament rules. Yes, the OLD testament had rules and guidelines to follow so they would not die in their sins. But that is not what christianity is about, yes it's good to know the whole bible and things that happened during those times but the whole book at the core is about Jesus coming to save the sinners.
When Jesus came to earth he started performing miracles and telling people to repent of their sins as he was constantly forgiving them. Now of course the religious leaders called this blasphemy because nobody is to call themselves God or act as If they are God. As jesus performed many miracles and forgiving sins, he was also fulfilling a ton of prophecies that had been written by him. And of course the religious leaders continued to hate him.
Jesus made it perfectly clear throughout the bible that if we just believe in him and God that all of our sins would be forgotten, and this is the full simplicity of Christianity, the word is called Grace. By Jesus dying on the cross he took all of our sins upon himself so we wouldn't have to die and be put into outer darkness. What does this mean? That we don't have to make sacrifices for our sins anymore. All we need to do is come to christ and repent. He is always faithful to forgive and you will receive everlasting life.
The bottom line is this. In the old testament they always had to do certain things and make certain sacrifices for their sins to be forgotten. And that is where religion came in,( religion=you screwed up here and here so you need to do this and this). But jesus said there is no more need for that. He was the ultimate sacrifice and his promise still and will forever stand. Whoever believes in him will be saved and have everlasting life.
